TRAVEL TIPS WHEN ARRIVING AT LOS CABOS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

If you have not been to Mexico before, it can be a little overwhelming at the airport your first time.   You will be in “Terminal 2” and start by going through customs.   They will ask where you are staying and for how long.  You can say “Peninsula Condos in the Hotel Zone” and the total length of your stay in Mexico.  You will then proceed to pick up your luggage.   Once you have your luggage, you will get in a line with your luggage for immigration, which includes either an x-ray or random inspection.   When get to the front of the line, you will be greeted and asked to push a button that turns a light either green or red.  Cross your fingers and hope for green.  Red indicates you’ve been selected at random for unpacking your suitcase for inspection, Congratulations!   Otherwise, with the green light, you put it through the x-ray machine and will be on your way!

Important: Once you’re on the way out, you will be bombarded with people wanting to “help” you with luggage, get you rental cars, hotels, etc.   Many of these are salespeople for timeshares and use "help" tactics to engage you.   It is best to ignore ALL of them and tell them you already have arrangements and get to the EXIT.  We highly recommend making travel arrangements in advance, so you can avoid the stress and scams!

Official Airport Link - https://www.loscabos-airport.com/

Once you are through the exit, you will see yellow numbered umbrellas. There will be drivers and helpers there with signs for your car or driver, depending on what you chose. Typically, they will let you know in advance how to find them and contact them!

Note:  WhatsApp (https://www.whatsapp.com/) is free and heavily used in Mexico for texting and calling.   We highly recommend getting this APP for your phone in advance.   It can help with limited coverage from your cell carrier, but US carriers will work fine in Mexico with roaming on. (Check on charges or get a “travel” pass if needed).

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS:

There are many companies for rentals and private transportation.   However, we can highly recommend the companies below for being on time and being honest and ethical and helping you have a great overall experience.

Private transportation:

Juan Pablo
+6241299608
[email protected]

All prices are round trip to and from airport in USD.
Sedan - $70, Van - $120, SUV - $130

Rental Cars:

Ventur-AMC rent car - https://amcrentacar.com/ | Ventur Car Rental - https://venturcarrental.com

Note: In our opinion, this is the absolute BEST rental car company you will find (Same location, two people / companies)!   Many others including brand name companies like Hertz, AVIS won’t have cars (even when they confirm your reservation), will charge you for damage, and over $3000 on a credit card for damage protection.   (Just look at reviews.  They are not operated the same as in the US!). They will also pick you up and take you to or from the Airport for FREE when renting a car from them.  Prices vary on vehicle and length of rental.   Can be booked on the website and get confirmation via email. Recommend emailing or visiting in person for best price if time allows.

UBER:

Although airport staff may inform you that Uber isn’t available for pickups, you can summon an Uber from the airport. Simply wait at the drop-off point for arrivals, which is located on the main level upstairs. If there are any issues with your pickup, the driver will message you with directions.  For the location ofthe condo, choose "Casita de la Playa - Zona Hotelera San Jose".

Additionally, there’s a mini-mart (Oxxo) nearby that is within walking distance, where you can also arrange for an Uber pickup. As of 2024, expect the fare to be around $42 plus tip for each ride.

Taxi - Tips For Taking A Taxi In Los Cabos:

If you will be taking a taxi in Los Cabos there are a few things you can do to improve the experience and protect yourself.   The last thing you want is for your vacation to start off on the wrong foot.  You can follow these tips to help prevent that from happening.

          • Always look for an official license or badge, or municipal stamp on the vehicle.
          • Verify the exact rate with the driver before getting into the taxi.
          • Instead of hailing taxis on the street, hire one from a taxi rank, or “sitio.”
          • Be sure to keep change on you so that you can pay your fare as close to the dollar as possible, plus tip of course.

GETTING TO THE CONDO:

Using your phone, from Google Maps, put in “Casita de la Playa” or “Peninsula Condos” for detailed driving instructions if needed.  Most locals will know exactly where to take you.

From the airport, you will either take the toll road (10) highway or the (1) through the city, depending on your preference (or driver’s preference) to San Jose Del Cabo Hotel Zone.   The toll road is less than $2.50 each way and is much faster with no lights!   US Currency is fine for paying the toll, and they can make change for smaller bills.

Either way, you will end up at a turnabout by La Comer super store (Formerly “Mega”) where both come together.  Follow the roundabout around and continue southeast until the next round about on “P Maelcon” towards the ocean.

Notes on Driving:   At the roundabout, cars take turns merging in and out of the circle, but use caution as some drivers do not yield.  Also, stop signs (“Alto”) are more of a slow roll than stop!   If you see a car with hazards on, slow down!

You will go over a few LARGE speed bumps and then get to another turnabout on the Malecon.  Curve around to the left (heading east) paying attention to traffic flow.  You will see the Viceroy on the right, which are large white buildings with no windows.  At the next resort (Barcelo Gran Faro), you will take a left through the median.  (If you pass the Cabo Azul on your right, you’ve gone too far!)   You will also see a brown sign for El Pescador Mall (Rock and Brew is no longer there and not red, but sign and building are present!). Follow the road and continue to bear to the left.

When you see a sign for Peninsula Condo in the median, continue left up the hill to the gate at the association.

Pull through gate and stop and check-in with the guard.   Let them know you are a guest of the Wildeys staying in Villa 1, #103.   Also tell him you have a gate pass and opener, but they are in the unit.

Then proceed to drive straight back to the end.   Villa #1 is the last unit on the right, closest to the pool.   You can park in any stall that has “Villa 1” painted on the curb.  There are also some unmarked stalls further away if needed.

ARRIVING LATE?

If arriving very late and the gate is closed with no guard is present, there is a walk-through gate to the left of the drive-through gate.   Gate code is 3081#.  You will need to walk into the condo and get the gate opener.  You can then open the gate and drive in.
